The fish child

The fish child is an Argentinean film from 2009 whose director is Lucía Puenzo. This is a 96 minute drama film that tells a desperate love story between two young girls of extremely social backgrounds who, unable to find a place for their love in the world they live in, are pushed to commit a crime.

Lala is a girl from a wealthy argentinean family, and "la Guayi" is one of the maids that work in Lala's house. Both grew up together and fell in love. Lala and la Guayi planned to scape from the house and cross the border to go to Paraguay to live together and love each other for the rest of their life. As a response for jealousy Lala had of her father (after whitening how he fucked her girlfriend), she kills him and escapes to Paraguay hoping to meet la Guayi in there, but la Guayi got caught by the police, they blamed her for the murder and she got locked out in a women's prison for minors.

The story is much more complicated than this, but what is worth to say is that it involves a lot of drama, passionated, crimes and family related scenes.

When it comes to interesting shots and scenes in this film, I should talk about one that happens in the Ypoá lake. Lala came there in Paraguay to wait for her lover and she founds that there is a mystical story related to that lake, which has a big tree where people put many offerings to the "child fish". In this scene, Lala enters to the lake and we can see a camera panning that shows us all the offerings while she is walking towards the tree. The predominant color is the blue, which in my opinion gives a very melancholic sensation to the viewer.

Suddenly she enters deep in the water and swims, and we could see her white dress moving and the light reflections coming from the sun from an under the water perspective. Deep in the water she could see the fish child, who says hello to her and then disappears swimming in the lake.

This film is very beautiful. I believe it in wonderful in every sense, from it's story and script to the way it was filmed. The story is very powerful and very well narrated.

I really recommend you guys to check it out. It si currently on Netflix.

This is a video of my favorite scene:
